Vacancy for a voluntary Treasurer at CIB!

Success story from Cued Speech Association UK

Charitable giving fell during the recession
Reports have suggested that the amount of money donated to good causes fell by 11% in the year to April. Figures from the Charities Aid Foundation and the National Council for Voluntary Organisations show the estimated total donations fell from £11.2bn in 2007-8 to £9.9bn.

The report, based on a survey of 3,316 people, found that the drop in giving was due in part to the fall in large donations made by high-earning professionals. Most people give cash donations, although larger amounts tend to be given via direct debit.

Research by The Charity Commission, which oversees the sector, also showed that 56% of charities surveyed said they had been affected by the economic downturn. They have also found that one in three not-for-profit organisations said they had brought in measures to try to tackle the impact of the recession. Some 14% were reducing costs, 11% increasing fundraising efforts and 6% drawing on reserves. In addition, 5% said they were postponing offering new services, while 2% had reduced staff numbers. However, just 3% said they had considered collaborating with another charity, while the same percentage had thought about merging.
