Wiltshire police are delighted to be taking a fresh stock of soft toys for its roads policing vehicles.
Along with cones, signs, barrier tape and flashing beacons another important piece of equipment carried by vehicles in the Wiltshire Police Roads Policing Unit is a soft toy.
It’s a distressing time for anyone when they are involved in a road traffic collision but even more so for a young child whose parents or guardian may be injured and unable to speak to them. Historically this method has helped to keep them calm in stressful circumstances.
The Disney store in Swindon contacted The Charities Information Bureau, based in Devizes, to find out how they could donate the toys. They subsequently got in touch with the local Swindon Lions Club who contacted the police.
Roads Policing Inspector Nick Elton said: "A road traffic collision is a very distressing event but even more so for a child who can’t reach or speak to a parent or guardian. These toys allow us to help calm a child down and take their minds off things as much as possible whilst colleagues from ambulance and fire work to treat and free any injured or trapped persons. Stocks of toys had begun to dwindle and I was delighted when I heard of Disney’s intentions and would like to thank them for their generous donation."
The toys are all hygienically sealed and given to a child to keep.
Julie Allen from the Charities Information Bureau said: "I was contacted by the Disney store in Swindon who were keen to donate some toys and I immediately contacted the Swindon Lions as I knew they would have all the right contacts to ensure that the toys would soon be enjoyed by deserving children".
Alan Mitchell from Swindon Lions said: "The people of Swindon have been very generous in helping Disney to donate these toys and we are delighted to be able to help in their distribution. We have worked with Social Services and others to arrange distribution and it has been wonderful to see the reception that these toys have had when given as presents and to help children who have suffered traumatic events."
